Our Mission S.I.T.E. for African Women works with all people irrespective of religion, color, race, gender or status to fight traditions that oppress women and children in Africa and other parts of the world. S.I.T.E. for African Women initiates educational programs and support groups to help women improve their lives and live as full human beings within their African communities |
|
Background of the Problem Many African societies practice gender discrimination and impose oppressive traditions, rituals and taboos to women. While we at S.I.T.E. for African Women recognize the importance of traditions within different cultures, we also recognize the importance of questioning and changing traditions that deny the equal humanity of women. Some examples of these oppressive traditions still in place are: Female circumcision, the inheriting of women by one male family member from another, premature marriage of daughters for large dowries, domestic violence in the form of sexual, physical, and mental abuse, bias within the judicial system and exploitation by churches and other religious groups. These oppressive traditions are just some examples of the chains that need to be broken which are currently binding millions of women from living full and healthy lives. They are chains that are prohibiting African women from fully participating in the development of their communities and the betterment of society. Many women in Africa are deprived of education and in turn, the key to freedom. Many who are able to attend school often drop out due to the lack of encouragement from family members and cultural taboos. By depriving young girls of education and encouragement, tradition is depriving Africa itself of one of its greatest resources for growth and development. |
